The San Francisco County government meeting on July 4, 2025, focused on the Dreamkeeper Initiative (DKI), aimed at enhancing diversity and inclusion within city employment. Key discussions highlighted the collaborative efforts of various departments to recruit and support diverse community members for permanent city positions.
The meeting revealed that the Department of Human Resources (DHR) is actively working to improve the financial health and economic stability of the DKI cohort. This includes providing mentorship and guidance to help participants navigate the city’s employment structure and prepare for permanent roles. Currently, 29 positions have been funded under the initiative, with 17 filled and two individuals already promoted to permanent positions.
Portia Bunton, the city’s Diversity Recruitment Manager, emphasized the importance of individual support for applicants. She noted that the DKI has transformed lives by helping individuals see themselves in city employment roles for the first time. The DHR has implemented hands-on support, including one-on-one assistance with applications and monthly check-ins to address concerns and celebrate achievements.
The meeting also addressed the need for ongoing collaboration across city departments to ensure the success of the DKI. A new City Career Pathways Program Manager will be appointed to facilitate this effort, working closely with various departments and the Human Rights Commission to address community concerns and improve the hiring process.
Public comments during the meeting raised concerns about the effectiveness of funding and the need for greater community involvement in decision-making processes. Shervon Hunter, Executive Director of Stand in Peace International, urged city officials to engage more with community members to gather feedback on what is working and what challenges remain.
Overall, the meeting underscored the city’s commitment to fostering a diverse workforce and the ongoing efforts to support the career development of underrepresented groups within San Francisco’s government. The DHR aims to integrate these initiatives into their long-term plans to ensure sustained support for employees of color beyond the initial funding period.
