Parents urge school board to keep critical teachers at Sheridan Elementary

During a recent San Francisco school board meeting, parents and educators voiced their concerns over the potential reassignment of key teachers at Sheridan School, highlighting the significant impact these changes could have on students and families.

Parents expressed deep distress over the loss of a beloved teacher who provided essential support not only in academics but also in personal matters, such as transportation and food assistance. One parent, speaking through an interpreter, emphasized that the teacher played a crucial role in helping her son improve in reading and writing, subjects where he had been struggling. She urged the board to reconsider the decision to transfer this teacher, stating, "We are being affected by this."

Another parent echoed these sentiments, sharing that the teacher had been instrumental in supporting her children, who have Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). She argued that losing such a dedicated educator would be detrimental to the community and the students' educational progress.

The emotional testimonies continued as a third parent implored the board to halt the teacher transfers, citing the negative effects on children who become attached to their educators. "If you keep transferring the teachers, the kids are gonna suffer," she warned.

In response to these heartfelt appeals, two staff members from Sheridan, a speech pathologist and a resource specialist, also spoke out. They highlighted that the proposed changes contradict the core values of the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD), which prioritize student support and educational stability.

The meeting underscored the strong connection between educators and families at Sheridan, revealing a community united in their desire to maintain a stable and supportive learning environment for their children. As discussions continue, the board faces the challenge of balancing staffing needs with the voices of those directly impacted by their decisions.
