Developer outlines commercial redevelopment plan for 5 Point and updates on Mission Bay

The recent government meeting in San Francisco highlighted significant developments in urban planning and community initiatives. Key discussions centered around the 5 Point redevelopment project and updates on parking solutions in Mission Bay.

The developer of the 5 Point project has been in ongoing discussions with city officials to restart the initiative. Plans are being formulated to present to the commission by May, focusing on an initial commercial phase. This phase, which has shifted from retail to office space, is now targeting sectors such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and clean technology. Proposed amendments to the redevelopment plan include increasing commercial square footage and extending the project timeline.

In Mission Bay, the commission approved a plan allowing UDR, a building owner, to convert some on-site parking into public short-term commercial parking. In exchange, UDR will provide 20 lower-income parking leases for affordable housing residents in the area, addressing a critical parking shortage. A lottery for these spots was recently held, with leasing expected to begin in the next 45 days.

Additionally, the Transbay Block 2 project, which includes family and senior housing, is set to have a groundbreaking ceremony in late May. City officials are optimistic about the project and anticipate participation from the mayor and the commission during the celebration.
