In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the ongoing challenges and strategies surrounding the Laguna Honda Hospital's path to recertification following its decertification by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The meeting highlighted the significant financial implications of the decertification, which has affected both the hospital's operations and the care provided to its residents.

Laguna Honda, which relies heavily on federal reimbursement—approximately $200 million annually—has remained operational despite the decertification that began in April 2022. Officials emphasized their commitment to maintaining high-quality care during this transitional period. They have engaged external consultants and implemented an incident command system to address compliance issues, mirroring strategies used during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A critical aspect of the recertification process involves a settlement agreement with CMS, which includes a pause on involuntary discharges and transfers of residents until February 2, 2023.
