Commission recommends landmark designation for Saint James Presbyterian Church in Visitation Valley

The San Francisco Historic Preservation Commission convened on July 4, 2025, to discuss the landmark designation of the Saint James Presbyterian Church located at 240 Leland Avenue in Visitation Valley. The church's current structure, designed by renowned architect Julia Morgan, was dedicated in 1923. Morgan, a pioneering figure in architecture, is celebrated for her contributions to the field, and her design of Saint James reflects her distinctive style, featuring an open ceiling and large wood frame windows. The church is not only architecturally significant but also embodies the diverse cultural heritage of the area, particularly its Filipino community.

Support for the landmark designation came from various stakeholders, including community members and church representatives. Pastor Fernando Del Rosario emphasized the importance of the church in preserving the legacy of its founders and serving as a point of pride for the neighborhood. Marta Quan Stuthers from the San Francisco Presbytery and Carrie Young from San Francisco Heritage also voiced their support, underscoring the church's role in the community's history and its representation of diverse cultural narratives.
