Bayview residents demand accountability and health protections at Hunters Point meeting

Residents of Bayview Hunters Point are calling for urgent action to address public health concerns and environmental hazards in their community following a recent government meeting. The discussions highlighted significant issues surrounding the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, where residents have long expressed frustration over inadequate health protections and environmental oversight.

Leo DeS Martin, president of the Hunters Point Mothers and Fathers Committee, emphasized the dire health disparities faced by Bayview residents, noting a 15-year life expectancy gap compared to wealthier neighborhoods like Nob Hill. He urged local officials to prioritize the community's needs, stating, "We want the opportunity to live... We shouldn't have to wait 10 years for a yes."

Ariane Harrison, founder of the Marie Harrison Community Foundation, echoed these sentiments, criticizing the Department of Public Health for failing to adequately protect residents from environmental toxins. She pointed out alarming rates of respiratory diseases in the area, attributing them to long-term exposure to hazardous materials.

Dr. Ahimsa Portasoon Chai, a key figure in the Hunters Point Biomonitoring Program, presented evidence of human exposure to radioactive materials and called for the reinstatement of the Hunters Point Shipyard Restoration Advisory Board to ensure proper oversight and accountability.

The meeting also addressed the findings of a civil grand jury report, which revealed serious oversights in the cleanup process at the shipyard. Julia Dowell from San Francisco Baykeeper urged the Board of Supervisors to block land transfers until thorough cleanups are completed, especially in light of rising groundwater and sea levels that threaten to reactivate previously contaminated sites.

Community members expressed frustration over the lack of action from city officials, particularly Mayor London Breed, who decided not to implement key recommendations from the grand jury report. The call for immediate and effective measures to safeguard public health and the environment in Bayview Hunters Point remains a pressing concern for residents, who are determined to see their community thrive.
