Commission approves Grove Design District and Big Baobab entertainment permits

The San Francisco City Council has approved two significant permits aimed at enhancing local entertainment options while addressing community concerns. The Grove Design District, located at 65 Division Street, received approval for an indoor live entertainment permit and outdoor music activities on its patio. This venue, which has operated under a jam permit since January 2021 without any complaints, will now expand its outdoor hours to allow amplified sound and entertainment daily from 10 AM to 9 PM. The council's decision was supported by a lack of opposition from nearby businesses and residents, following outreach efforts that included sending 18 letters to local stakeholders.

In a separate decision, the council also approved a place of entertainment permit for Big Baobab at 2243 Mission Street, a sister establishment to the well-known Little Baobab. This new venue will serve Senegalese and West African cuisine and aims to become a neighborhood staple. The business plans to operate Wednesday through Sunday, featuring indoor live entertainment during dinner and DJs until 2 AM. Despite some opposition from a nearby homeowners association concerned about noise and property values, the council noted strong community support, including over 450 signatures and letters from local supervisors and a preschool.

To address the HOA's concerns, Big Baobab's owner has committed to soundproofing measures and agreed to limit outdoor entertainment hours. The San Francisco Police Department's Mission Station has also approved the permit without additional conditions. Both decisions reflect the city's commitment to fostering vibrant community spaces while balancing the needs of residents. As these venues prepare to open, they are expected to contribute positively to the local culture and economy.
