DBI Director O'Rearn unveils new site permit process to expedite housing development

San Francisco's Department of Building Inspection (DBI) is set to implement significant changes to the site permit process, aiming to expedite housing development timelines by up to two years. This announcement was made by Patrick O'Rearn, the Director of DBI, during a recent government meeting, where he emphasized the importance of these improvements for the city's housing crisis.

The proposed changes involve a bifurcation of the site permit process, with the Planning Department taking full oversight. This restructuring is expected to streamline operations and enhance efficiency, ultimately facilitating faster housing development. O'Rearn noted that legislation is being drafted to formalize these changes, with a community and stakeholder meeting scheduled for April 19. A joint meeting with the Planning Commission is also planned for May 18, where further details will be shared.

In addition to the permit process updates, O'Rearn highlighted the successful transition to remote work initiated during the COVID-19 pandemic. He recently presented at a California building officials meeting in San Diego, discussing the challenges and efficiencies gained through technology. This shift has allowed DBI to offer more services online, reducing the need for in-person visits and easing parking issues for residents.

O'Rearn also recognized Assistant Director Christine Gasparick for her recent graduation from a building official leadership academy, underscoring the department's commitment to professional development.
