Director Colfax updates San Francisco on COVID-19 and MPOX vaccination efforts

The San Francisco Health Commission meeting on July 4, 2025, commenced with a significant update from Director of Health, Dr. Grant Colfax. This meeting marked a procedural change, as the director's report will now consistently include updates on both COVID-19 and MPOX, previously known as monkeypox.

Dr. Colfax provided a comprehensive overview of the current MPOX situation in San Francisco, reporting 718 diagnosed cases as of August 30. He noted a promising trend, indicating that the increase in cases appears to be leveling off, a pattern also observed in other jurisdictions such as New York City, which is slightly ahead in the outbreak timeline.

The director emphasized the city's commitment to a robust public health response, particularly focusing on health equity and support for communities most affected by MPOX. To date, over 21,000 vaccines have been administered, and the city is now expanding vaccine eligibility. The new guidelines allow all gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals, as well as men who have sex with men, to receive the vaccine. Additionally, those who are eligible for a second dose, having waited more than 28 days since their first, are encouraged to contact healthcare providers, as multiple systems across the city are now offering the MPOX vaccine.
