Residents demand comprehensive cleanup of Hunters Point shipyard pollution issues

Concerns over environmental justice took center stage at the recent San Francisco County meeting, where community advocates voiced urgent calls for action regarding the toxic waste at the Bayview Hunters Point shipyard. Ronnie Diamont Wilson, a former nurse practitioner, highlighted the long-standing health issues faced by residents, particularly young people suffering from asthma. She criticized the U.S. Navy and city officials for their inadequate response to the community's health needs, emphasizing that residents have endured the consequences of pollution for over 70 years.

Wilson recounted a recent Navy presentation on cleanup plans that left many attendees confused and frustrated. She pointed out that toxins flow into the streets during heavy rains, underscoring the immediate dangers faced by the community. Additionally, she criticized city planning efforts that neglect the Bayview area, noting that proposed flood barriers would only protect other neighborhoods, potentially exacerbating flooding in Bayview.

Art Persico, representing the SF Grama Panthers, echoed these sentiments, condemning the environmental racism that has plagued the Bayview Hunters Point community. He called for a comprehensive cleanup of the shipyard, rejecting any plans that would merely cap the toxic waste. Persico referenced a 2022 Civil Grand Jury report urging the city to hire expert scientists to assess the risks posed by the contamination.
