Organizer Yulian Luo improves living conditions for low-income families in Chinatown

Residents of San Francisco's Chinatown are breathing a sigh of relief as ongoing support from the Department of Building Inspection (DBI) has led to significant improvements in housing conditions for low-income families. During a recent city meeting, Yulian Luo, a community organizer with the Chinese Progressive Association, shared a heartfelt account of how DBI's assistance has transformed the living situations of many families in the area.

Luo highlighted the dire conditions faced by families in older buildings, including severe maintenance issues such as damaged bathroom floors, drainage problems, and mold. These issues not only posed health risks but also affected the overall quality of life for residents, particularly for families with young children. After repeated attempts to address these concerns with building owners yielded little progress, Luo and her team stepped in to advocate for the families.

Thanks to the collaborative efforts between the organizers and DBI, many of these pressing issues have been resolved swiftly. Luo noted that regular visits from organizers help document building conditions and facilitate direct communication with landlords for necessary repairs. This proactive approach has made a tangible difference in the lives of over 200 low-income families served by the SO Families United Collaborative.

The meeting underscored the importance of community support and effective communication in addressing housing challenges. As the city continues to focus on improving living conditions, the partnership between residents, organizers, and city officials remains crucial in ensuring that families can live safely and healthily in their homes.
