Casa Justa empowers tenants with housing rights education and repair advocacy

Lucia Leal, a counselor from Casa Justa, shared her experiences supporting Black and Latinx communities in the Mission District. These initiatives empower tenants to request necessary repairs without fear of retaliation from landlords.

Leal recounted a successful case where a tenant facing eviction due to mold and other repair issues received assistance from Casa Justa. The organization connected the tenant with the Department of Building Inspection (DBI), where inspector Brandon Prasad facilitated the necessary repairs. This collaboration not only resolved the tenant's immediate concerns but also restored their dignity in their living situation.
