San Francisco General integrates La Casa de las Madres to aid domestic violence victims

The San Francisco County government meeting on July 4, 2025, focused on addressing interpersonal violence and the challenges faced by survivors in accessing community services. A primary care physician from the Department of Public Health shared insights from their 30 years of experience, noting that only a handful of patients had followed through on referrals to domestic violence agencies. Barriers such as lack of housing, food insecurity, transportation issues, and the fear of labeling themselves as survivors contribute to this reluctance.

To combat these challenges, the physician described a successful initiative funded by a federal grant, which involved bringing an advocate from La Casa de las Madres onto the San Francisco General campus. This program aimed to provide immediate support in primary care and women's clinics, allowing healthcare providers to ask patients about relationship stress without requiring them to identify as victims or survivors of abuse. Over two and a half years, the initiative served more than 200 individuals, significantly increasing the identification and assistance provided to those in need.

The physician emphasized the positive impact of having an advocate available on-site, describing it as a "miracle" for patients to receive immediate support. The meeting concluded with discussions on the potential for expanding this program to reach more individuals in the community, reflecting a commitment to improving access to vital services for survivors of interpersonal violence.
