Supervisor Marr highlights housing needs for elderly residents at city meeting

A proposal for an affordable residential care facility for the elderly (RCFE) has sparked significant discussion among San Francisco County officials, highlighting the urgent need for housing solutions that allow seniors to age in place. The proposed project includes a budget of $1.7 million for acquisition and an additional $450,000 for operational subsidies over the first two years. However, officials noted that while the Dignity Fund could potentially support the operational costs, it cannot cover acquisition expenses. This raises concerns about the feasibility of the project, as one initiative could consume a large portion of the available budget.

Officials acknowledged the need for a collaborative approach, stating that it is not solely the responsibility of the Department of Disability and Aging to serve older adults and people with disabilities. They called for a coordinated effort among various departments, including the Health Department, to ensure comprehensive housing and subsidy support.

As discussions continue, the focus remains on finding sustainable solutions that meet the needs of San Francisco's aging population, with the hope that this proposal could pave the way for more affordable housing options in the future.
