The San Francisco Health Service System (SFHSS) presented its first annual update on the Racial Equity Action Plan during a recent city government meeting, highlighting significant strides made in promoting racial equity within the department. The update, delivered by Senior Health Plan Planner Leticia Harris, emphasized the importance of addressing race and social determinants of health as critical components of overall well-being.
The Racial Equity Action Plan, approved by the board last year, aims to implement initiatives that foster an inclusive workplace and improve services for the community. Harris outlined the plan's two phases: the first focuses on internal staff programs and policies, while the second, set to launch in 2022, will target external services and community engagement.
Key achievements from the past year include the development of a departmental statement on health, racial equity, diversity, and inclusion, as well as the establishment of a racial equity advisory group. The department has also prioritized staff recruitment and retention, aiming to build a diverse workforce and enhance professional development opportunities.
Harris noted that a significant portion of the department's efforts has been driven by staff feedback, with a recent climate survey revealing a strong desire for increased awareness and training around racial equity. The department has committed to making racial equity discussions a regular part of staff meetings and has already seen improvements in staff understanding of their colleagues' lived experiences.
As the SFHSS continues to implement its Racial Equity Action Plan, the focus remains on creating a culture of inclusivity and support, with plans for ongoing training and community engagement in the coming year. This initiative not only aims to transform the internal dynamics of the department but also seeks to enhance the quality of services provided to the residents of San Francisco.
