The San Francisco City Council recently discussed a request from Al's Place, a local restaurant, to extend its outdoor amplified sound permit. Owner Aaron London attended the meeting to address community concerns regarding noise levels and to clarify the restaurant's history with outdoor sound operations.
Currently, Al's Place is permitted to operate outdoor amplified sound from 5:30 PM to 10 PM daily. London is seeking to extend these hours to midnight from Wednesday through Sunday. This request comes as the restaurant aims to enhance the dining experience for patrons while being mindful of noise complaints from nearby residents.
During the meeting, it was noted that the restaurant was previously unaware of the city's permitting process for outdoor sound, which has been in place for about five years. To mitigate potential noise issues, London agreed to lower the volume after 10 PM to match ambient sound levels measured from 25 feet away, rather than the standard 50 feet. Additionally, he committed to turning off speakers in areas of the outdoor dining space that are not occupied by diners.
The council is considering two options for the permit extension: the full request to midnight or a more limited option allowing outdoor sound until 11 PM on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, with midnight hours on Fridays and Saturdays. The discussion reflects the city's ongoing efforts to balance business interests with community concerns about noise and quality of life.
As the council deliberates, the outcome of this request could significantly impact both Al's Place and the surrounding neighborhood, highlighting the importance of collaboration between local businesses and residents in addressing community needs.
