San Francisco Health Commission celebrates opening of SoMa Rise drug sobering center

The San Francisco Health Commission meeting on July 4, 2025, highlighted significant developments in public health initiatives, particularly the opening of the SoMa Rise drug sobering center. This facility, located in the South of Market area, aims to provide essential services for individuals struggling with substance use, offering a safe space for those intoxicated by opioids, methamphetamines, and other substances. Deputy Director of Health, Navina Bhabha, presented the director's report, which included updates on COVID-19 and monkeypox, as well as the commendable performance of the ZSFG clinical laboratory during a recent unannounced survey, achieving 99% compliance. Bhabha also recognized the critical role of the hazardous materials response team, which participated in a simulation exercise to prepare for emergency situations involving hazardous materials.

In a moment of recognition, the commission celebrated former Health Commissioner Romagai for her influential contributions to LGBTQ+ rights and social justice, underscoring her decades-long commitment to various marginalized communities.

The meeting concluded with a call for public comments, but none were received. The commissioners expressed their gratitude for Romagai's service, emphasizing the importance of her legacy in the health sector.
