Supervisor Preston reallocates $200,000 to Department of Building Inspection for tenant outreach

In a recent San Francisco County government meeting, a significant discussion centered around the reallocation of $200,000 intended for housing support. The funds, originally designated for the Mayor's Office of Housing and Community Development (MOCD), are now being redirected to the Department of Building Inspection (DBI) to enhance tenant outreach and support for residents in federally funded housing.

Supervisor Preston highlighted the urgency of this funding, which aims to assist residents, particularly those from disproportionately affected African American communities, in navigating their housing needs. The funding was initially secured to hire two experienced housing organizers who would provide independent assistance to tenants in publicly subsidized housing. However, delays in the disbursement process led to frustrations, as repeated assurances from MOCD about the timely release of funds did not materialize.

After months of back-and-forth communication and no progress, the ordinance to transfer the funds to DBI was introduced. Fortunately, just before the meeting, MOCD confirmed the transfer of funds to DBI, rendering the ordinance moot. Supervisor Preston expressed his disappointment over the delays, emphasizing the dire housing conditions faced by residents in his district and the need for immediate action.

The meeting underscored the challenges in the housing support system and the importance of timely access to resources for vulnerable communities.
