San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is gearing up for a major infrastructure project aimed at safeguarding against flooding and rising sea levels. During a recent government meeting, officials outlined the Shoreline Protection Program, which is set to undergo environmental review with a draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) expected to be published on August 31. The public will have the opportunity to comment on the project from September 1 to October 17, with a hearing scheduled for October 6.
David Kim, SFO's senior environmental planner, presented the project, emphasizing its critical role in protecting the airport, which serves as a vital transportation hub and economic engine for the region. The airport currently faces significant risks from flooding, particularly during a 100-year flood event, which could inundate most of its land. The proposed protection system aims to remove the airport from the floodplain and adapt to future sea level rise projections.
The project will involve constructing a shoreline protection system along eight miles of the airport's perimeter, with wall heights ranging from 4 to 14 feet. Most of the structure will consist of metal sheet pile walls, while specific areas will feature concrete walls. The construction is anticipated to last seven years and will include additional elements such as stormwater outfall reconstruction and roadway realignment to ensure compliance with FAA standards.
Kim highlighted the importance of minimizing hazards to airport operations and maintaining runway capacity throughout the construction process. The project is designed not only to protect infrastructure but also to enhance emergency vehicle access and reduce wildlife attractants that could pose risks to aircraft.
As the project moves forward, it represents a significant step in addressing the challenges posed by climate change and ensuring the continued safe operation of one of the nation's busiest airports.
