Residents express concerns over health impacts from new housing project near Kai Ming Center

Stan Hayes, a member of the Telegraph Hill Dwellers, voiced support for affordable housing but raised alarms about the size of the proposed building, which would be adjacent to the Kai Ming Head Start Center and North Beach Place, a residence for disabled individuals. He recommended several protective measures, including prohibiting short-term rentals, implementing noise curfews, and ensuring construction activities do not disrupt the community.

Teresa Flandric, a long-time resident and member of the North Beach Tenants Committee, criticized the planning process as inequitable, stating that local residents were excluded from discussions that directly affect their lives. She emphasized the need for family housing rather than short-term rentals, highlighting the existing overcrowding in single-room occupancy (SRO) units in the area.

The meeting underscored the community's desire for a development that prioritizes the needs of current residents while addressing the pressing demand for affordable family housing in North Beach. The council is expected to consider the recommendations made by community members as they move forward with the project.
