San Francisco implements new AV incident reporting for Cruise operations

San Francisco's Department of Transportation is taking significant steps to enhance safety and communication regarding autonomous vehicles (AVs) operating in the city. During a recent government meeting, officials confirmed that the department has implemented a new reporting system specifically for incidents involving AVs, following a notable increase in unusual occurrences and accidents.

The decision to create a distinct AV reporting form comes in response to a rise in incidents, which include not only collisions but also obstructions and interference with city operations. To date, the department has received 92 reports related to these incidents, primarily from two companies operating in the area. This new form is designed to capture detailed information, such as the response time of the companies involved and the nature of the communications made regarding each incident.

Officials noted that the introduction of this reporting system has been beneficial, providing clearer data and insights into the interactions between AVs and city infrastructure. The department is now collaborating with the Municipal Transportation Agency (MTA) and other transit authorities to aggregate incident reports, further enhancing the understanding of AV operations in San Francisco.
