Urban Alchemy to operate new shelter at 711 Post with holistic community approach

San Francisco County has taken a significant step towards addressing homelessness by approving a partnership with Urban Alchemy to operate a new shelter at 711 Post Street. This facility, a former youth hostel, will provide 123 individual rooms, accommodating up to 250 people. The shelter will feature essential amenities, including bathrooms, showers, a commercial kitchen, and community spaces designed for social interaction and support services.

Urban Alchemy will deliver 24/7 support and operation services, focusing on a less congregate model of shelter that has proven effective during the pandemic. This approach aims to create a more dignified living environment for guests while also addressing the needs of the surrounding community through street activation services.

The decision to move forward with this initiative stems from the success of 25 shelter-in-place hotels operated during the pandemic, which highlighted the benefits of individualized shelter options. Urban Alchemy, known for its work in communities facing challenges related to poverty, mental illness, and homelessness, will bring its extensive experience to this project.
