San Francisco Fire Department conducts challenging agility test for new recruits

The San Francisco Fire Department held a meeting on July 4, 2025, to discuss various topics, including the physical agility test for prospective candidates and updates on community engagement initiatives. Chief O'Connor presented a detailed report on the physical agility test, which is a crucial part of the recruitment process for the department.

The test begins when candidates don medical bags and start their time. They must ascend six flights of stairs to the Seventh Story, where they will remove three medical bags. Following this, candidates are required to drag a mannequin weighing 165 pounds for 15 feet before placing it back down. They then return to their medical bags, put them back on, and descend the stairs to the first floor. The final task involves removing a loaded gurney, also weighing 165 pounds, from an ambulance and securing it back in place. The entire test must be completed within a maximum time of 4 minutes and 30 seconds. Chief O'Connor emphasized that this test simulates the challenging environments firefighters face in San Francisco.

In his report, Chief O'Connor encouraged potential candidates to consider a career with the San Francisco Fire Department, highlighting the rewarding nature of the job despite the physical demands of the agility test. He provided insights into the preparation required for the test and reassured candidates that perseverance during the test leads to a fulfilling career.

Commissioner Fraser expressed appreciation for the report and the accompanying videos, noting the challenges of singing the national anthem. She also inquired about the department's initiative, "Coffee with Behavioral Health," indicating a focus on mental health support within the department.
