Fire Chief DeWitt praises COVID decline and welcomes new command staff member

In a recent meeting, San Francisco officials discussed significant updates regarding public health and community safety, particularly in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and emergency preparedness efforts.

Chief DeWitt commended his team for their dedication, noting a positive trend in COVID-19 cases within the city. Currently, only ten members of the department are off due to COVID-19, with nine of those being long-term absences. The department has successfully reduced the number of unvaccinated personnel to approximately 20, excluding those on disability or long-term leave. Chief DeWitt is conducting administrative hearings for these members and plans to submit a report with recommendations to the Far Commission.

Chief DeWitt and Assistant Deputy Chief Artis Harris Brown recently met with residents of Mira Loma Park to discuss neighborhood resiliency and preparedness for emergencies, including wildfires and earthquakes. The chief expressed appreciation for community involvement, emphasizing that proactive engagement can significantly enhance safety during major incidents.

The meeting also featured a demonstration by Chief O'Connor on the city's emergency firefighting water supply system at Fort Mason, attended by several supervisors, including interim Mayor Catherine Stephanie. This drill aimed to educate elected officials about the city's firefighting capabilities and needs.

As the department prepares for leadership changes, Captain Ramon Serrano is set to transition into the role of Assistant Deputy Chief, following the retirement of Chief Don DeWitt at the end of the year. The meeting concluded with a warm welcome for Captain Serrano, highlighting the importance of a smooth transition in leadership.
