Fire Department prepares for new training academies amid staffing challenges

The San Francisco Fire Department is gearing up for a significant boost in staffing, with plans to train and deploy 150 new recruits in 2022. Chief Fellow announced during a recent city meeting that three academies are projected for the upcoming year, each expected to graduate 50 recruits. This initiative aims to address ongoing staffing shortages and enhance emergency response capabilities.

The first academy is set to graduate 100 recruits on December 23, with 35 of them ready to hit the field by December 24. Chief Fellow emphasized the urgency of filling these positions, especially as the department anticipates increased demand during the holiday season. "Anytime in January would be welcome," he noted, highlighting the critical need for personnel.

Training for the recruits includes essential skills such as fire scenarios and self-survival techniques, ensuring they are well-prepared for real-life emergencies. The department is also focusing on diversity and inclusion, with ongoing discussions about promotional requirements and mentorship programs to support the career development of its members.

In addition to recruitment efforts, the department has made strides in health and safety initiatives. A recent wellness award recognized the department's commitment to member health, and vaccination efforts continue to be a priority, with 100 members receiving booster shots recently. Notably, for the first time in 18 months, there are no members currently under quarantine due to COVID-19, a positive sign of the department's vaccination efforts.
