San Francisco Fire Department unveils expanded behavioral health unit initiatives

The San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD) held a significant meeting on July 4, 2025, focusing on the Health, Safety, and Wellness Division, particularly the Behavioral Health Unit (BHU). Battalion Chief Matt Alba presented an overview of the BHU, highlighting its critical role in supporting the mental health of firefighters and emergency responders.

Chief Alba introduced the BHU's structure and its evolution since its inception in the late 1960s, emphasizing the increasing demand for mental health services due to rising call volumes and the stresses associated with the job. The BHU currently includes peer support teams, critical incident response teams, and facility dogs aimed at providing emotional support to staff.

Acting Captain Heather Buren elaborated on the BHU's components, which include peer navigators who assist members with behavioral health needs, critical incident response teams that provide immediate support after traumatic events, and a chaplaincy program aimed at offering spiritual and emotional guidance. Buren noted the importance of peer support in reducing stigma around mental health issues and fostering a supportive environment within the department.

Paramedic Jennifer Green discussed current challenges faced by SFFD members, including mandatory overtime, staffing shortages, and the impact of recent violent incidents in the community. She highlighted the need for additional resources to address these issues effectively, particularly as many members are relatively new to the profession.

The meeting concluded with a call for support from the Board of Supervisors to enhance the BHU's capacity, underscoring the urgent need for mental health resources in the fire service. The SFFD aims to expand its behavioral health initiatives to better serve its members and respond to the increasing demands of their roles.
