Transbay project manager clarifies SBE participation numbers at commission meeting

Concerns over Small Business Enterprise (SBE) participation rates took center stage during a recent San Francisco government meeting, as officials clarified the figures related to public works contracts. Benjamin Bridal, the Transbay project manager, addressed the confusion surrounding the SBE numbers, revealing that the correct participation rate is an impressive 93%, a significant increase from an earlier reported figure of 58%.

Bridal explained that the memorandum detailing the schematic design portion of the project had initially misrepresented the SBE participation rate. He emphasized that the 93% figure accurately reflects the portion of contracts awarded to small businesses, with 58.1% of that amount going specifically to San Francisco-based minority business enterprises.

George Bridal, the acting supervisor for contract compliance, further elaborated on the financial implications, noting that the total contract value was $340,000, with the majority allocated to SBE firms. This clarification aims to ensure transparency and accountability in the city’s contracting processes, particularly as it relates to supporting local and minority-owned businesses.
