Concerns over student health and safety took center stage at the recent San Francisco government meeting, as community members voiced urgent calls for increased school nursing staff and clearer communication regarding COVID-19 protocols.
Maureen, a senior clerk with SEIU 10 21, highlighted the critical role school nurses play in managing COVID-19 tracking, medication distribution, and communication with families. She urged the city to provide nurses for all schools to alleviate the stress currently placed on staff handling these responsibilities. “Please give all schools nurses to alleviate the stress that this is causing,” she implored.
Parents echoed these sentiments, expressing confusion and fear over the ongoing pandemic. Allison, a middle school parent, pointed out the lack of regular updates on COVID-19 responses from the district, noting that her child’s school had already received multiple positive notification letters. “Parents and families are scared. We need to know what Doctor Matthews and your team are going to do to keep our kids healthy,” she stated.
The discussion also touched on the importance of addressing the educational needs of students, particularly those who have experienced learning loss during the pandemic. One parent emphasized the need for a cohesive educational recovery plan, urging the district to focus on all students, including those learning online.
As the meeting concluded, the urgency for action was clear. Community members are looking for immediate solutions to ensure the health and safety of students and staff as they navigate the complexities of returning to in-person learning.
