San Francisco Fire Department reports decline in COVID cases among personnel

The San Francisco Fire Department reported a significant decrease in COVID-19 cases among its members during a recent government meeting. Currently, 15 firefighters are off duty due to COVID, with 10 of those being long-term absences exceeding 30 days. The department has implemented strict vaccination protocols, stating that those who are not fully vaccinated are barred from entering fire stations. As of now, 41 active members are non-compliant with the vaccination requirement, excluding those on disability or Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA).

The department is actively addressing non-compliance by inviting affected members to administrative meetings, where decisions regarding potential separation from the department will be made. Despite these challenges, the department has seen a positive response to vaccination efforts, with an expectation of 20 to 30 members getting vaccinated daily.

In addition to health updates, the meeting highlighted the successful return of Fleet Week, which drew large crowds and showcased the department's fireboat. Chief Nicholson expressed gratitude to the team for their efforts during this busy period, which also included participation in the Italian Heritage Parade.

The department is preparing for upcoming firefighter academies, with a focus on increasing diversity and equity in recruitment processes. Chief Nicholson has been meeting with various employee groups to foster communication and collaboration. Discussions with Supervisor Safaie are underway to explore new testing methods aimed at enhancing diversity within the department.
