Brookfield Properties unveils Stonestown redevelopment plans to create vibrant mixed-use community

The San Francisco Planning Commission convened on July 4, 2025, to discuss the Stonestown mixed-use development project, which aims to transform a 30-acre site adjacent to the Stonestown Mall into a vibrant community hub. The meeting highlighted significant updates on the project, including a proposed increase in residential units and a draft design standards and guidelines document.

Brookfield Properties, the project sponsor, presented an overview of the development, which is expected to provide up to 3,500 new residential units, ranging from three to 18 stories. The plan emphasizes creating a walkable and bike-friendly environment, with nearly six acres of parks and open spaces, as well as improved retail and dining options. The project is designed to alleviate the housing crisis in San Francisco while enhancing community interaction and environmental sustainability.

Key features of the development include a new retail main street, expanded bike lanes, and underground parking to reduce surface lots. The design aims to integrate the site with surrounding neighborhoods, including connections to nearby schools and parks. The project will be built in phases to minimize disruption to existing businesses.

The Planning Commission also discussed proposed amendments to the city’s general plan to align with the project’s goals, including enhancing environmental justice and sustainable development. The amendments will be reviewed in upcoming meetings, with further approvals expected in early 2024.

Public comments during the meeting reflected strong community support for the project, with residents emphasizing the need for increased housing and improved infrastructure. The commission is set to continue discussions and finalize the design standards and guidelines in the coming months, marking a significant step toward realizing this ambitious development.
