Ruth Asawa School mock trial team earns second place at state competition

In a recent meeting, the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) highlighted several key achievements and initiatives aimed at enhancing educational experiences for students.

One of the standout moments was the recognition of the Ruth Asawa School of the Arts mock trial team, which secured second place in the state competition organized by the Constitutional Rights Foundation. Competing against teams from 36 counties, the team showcased their skills by arguing the fictional case of The People versus Kobe. This accomplishment reflects the dedication and hard work of the students and their head coach, Clifford Yin.

Additionally, Aptis Middle School is making strides in project-based learning, particularly in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math). Students are engaging in hands-on experiences such as indoor vertical gardening, which is particularly beneficial given the cooler climate of the area. Through this program, students learn about sustainability, soil science, and even take plants home to cultivate, promoting equity in access to gardening resources.

The meeting also addressed administrative updates, including the approval of a draft school calendar for the 2022-2023 academic year, which will be presented to the board for final approval. Families can expect to receive school assignments via mail and through the ParentVUE portal, with support available through enrollment workshops.

In a commitment to inclusivity, SFUSD is partnering with various organizations to offer workshops focused on LGBTQ+ identities for caregivers and families. These workshops aim to foster understanding and support within the school community.

Health and safety protocols were also discussed, with an update on masking recommendations in line with public health guidance. While masking is now strongly recommended, it is not mandatory in transitional kindergarten through eighth-grade schools. Furthermore, each student and staff member has been provided with rapid home test kits to ensure safety as they return from spring break.
