San Francisco secures $1.5M grant for Harvey Milk Plaza redesign project

San Francisco County has taken a significant step towards enhancing Harvey Milk Plaza, following the approval of a resolution to accept $1.5 million in grant funding from the California Arts Council. This funding will support the design and planning of improvements at the iconic plaza, located at the Castro Muni Station, with the project expected to run from July 2022 through February 2023.

The resolution, brought forward by Supervisor Mandelmann, aims to transform Harvey Milk Plaza into a more vibrant community gathering space that honors the legacy of Harvey Milk and the LGBTQ rights movement. The project will also incorporate essential safety and accessibility upgrades. The Friends of Harvey Milk Plaza, a community organization, has been instrumental in developing a vision for the redesign, which has garnered widespread support from local stakeholders, including various neighborhood associations and community groups.

This latest funding builds on previous investments, including $550,000 allocated over the past three years for project management and environmental reviews, as well as an earlier $1 million state grant in 2017 that initiated the design process. The current grant will enable the Department of Public Works to finalize construction drawings and cover related costs, moving the project closer to a "shovel-ready" status by mid-2023.

Community members expressed their enthusiasm during the meeting, highlighting the project's potential to foster greater community engagement and celebrate the rich history of the area. The project has received endorsements from the San Francisco Arts Commission and is seen as a vital addition to the city's cultural landscape.

As the project progresses, the Department of Public Works will continue to coordinate with the Friends of Harvey Milk Plaza to ensure that the final plans reflect the community's vision and needs.
