Governor Newsom appoints Steve Fanelli to California contractor state license board

Governor Gavin Newsom has appointed Steve Fanelli, the chief plumbing inspector, to the Contractor State License Board, a move that promises to enhance consumer protection in California's construction industry. Fanelli, who will continue his leadership role at the Department of Building Inspection (DBI), brings extensive experience to the board, which oversees licensing and regulation.

In addition to this significant appointment, the DBI announced the successful launch of its expanded compliance control initiative aimed at addressing serial building code violations. This initiative, which began in April with the support of the commission, focuses on tracking customers with serious violations. Once a customer receives a pre-notice of violation within an 18-month period, their projects will undergo increased scrutiny and public notice.

In the past six months, the DBI has made substantial progress, including staff training and the development of new policies. A flagging system has been implemented in the permit tracking system, and a dedicated webpage has been created to provide information about the initiative. Currently, there are 33 notices of violations on record, affecting approximately 75 individuals and entities.

The DBI expressed gratitude for the team's efforts and encouraged continued public participation in the commission's processes. As the city navigates these changes, officials remind residents to adhere to health guidelines, including wearing masks and getting vaccinated.
