President Biden and Prime Minister Trudeau join San Francisco sustainability summit

The San Francisco Commission on the Environment convened on July 4, 2025, to discuss various agenda items, including upcoming events, committee reports, and procedural updates regarding public meetings.

The meeting began with an announcement about the upcoming Asia-Pacific summit in San Francisco, which will feature President Biden, Vice President Harris, and Prime Minister Trudeau. Acting Director Zhu highlighted the city's outreach efforts, including a presentation scheduled for Valentine's Day with the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce to discuss long-term funding needs. Zhu also reported on successful community engagement activities, such as tabling at local events, which facilitated over 900 conversations in multiple languages. Additionally, the city’s "fix it clinics" at local libraries received positive media coverage, repairing numerous bikes and clothing items.

Following the updates, the commission moved to committee reports. The Policy Committee has not met since November, with the next meeting scheduled for February 13. The Operations Committee reported on its last meeting, which included discussions on the Environment Department's budget and website updates. The Search Committee is set to review applications for the Environment Department director position in an upcoming meeting.

A significant discussion point was the update on the format of commission meetings. With the end of COVID-19 emergency rules, the commission will revert to pre-pandemic meeting protocols, requiring in-person attendance for commissioners. However, there was a recommendation to continue using WebEx for remote public comment to enhance accessibility. The commission debated the merits of various platforms for remote participation, with some members expressing a preference for alternatives to WebEx due to its limitations.

The meeting concluded with the nomination and election of new leadership positions. Commissioner Eddie Ahn was re-elected as president, while Commissioner Juan was nominated and elected as vice president. The meeting adjourned at 7:51 PM, with plans for future meetings and discussions already in place.
