Commission honors teachers for heroic efforts during San Francisco fire rescue

San Francisco's recent city commission meeting highlighted the heroic actions of teachers and firefighters during a significant fire incident on May 13, 2025, at 10 Inka Lane. The fire, which was well-advanced upon the arrival of emergency services, prompted multiple rescues, showcasing the bravery and quick thinking of both educators and first responders.

During the meeting, Chief Postel recounted the intense scene, noting that seven individuals were rescued from the building, thanks in large part to the proactive measures taken by teachers at Rosa Parks Elementary School. These educators alerted residents to the danger and assisted in evacuating the building before firefighters arrived. Their actions were crucial in ensuring that emergency crews could focus on those who were still trapped inside.

Assistant Chief Ken Yee, who served as the incident commander, detailed the challenges faced by the fire department, including being short-staffed due to ongoing officer training. Despite these limitations, firefighters successfully executed rescues, navigating through flames and smoke to save lives. Yee emphasized the importance of teamwork and the critical role played by the teachers, stating, "Without their action and intervention, the results would have been much different."

The meeting also featured a reading from the Nichi Bay Times, which highlighted the teachers' experiences during the fire. Cecilia Ina Lee, one of the teachers, described her immediate response to the emergency, while her colleague Vincent Reyes bravely entered the building to assist residents, suffering minor injuries in the process.

In recognition of their bravery, the commission presented certificates to the five teachers involved, honoring their selfless actions that day. The meeting concluded with a moment of appreciation for the collaborative efforts of the community and emergency responders, reinforcing the importance of preparedness and quick action in crisis situations.
