SFUSD employees voice frustrations over payroll issues and workplace conditions

The recent San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) meeting highlighted significant concerns from educators regarding ongoing payroll issues and the impact of the Empower system. Multiple speakers, including teachers and former employees, expressed frustration over delayed and incorrect payments, which they say have worsened over the past months.

Eugene Pearson, a teacher at Burton High School, detailed his struggles with tax withholding errors that have resulted in financial penalties and increased monthly deductions. He also shared his experience of navigating health insurance complications, emphasizing the emotional toll these issues have taken on him and his colleagues. Pearson announced his decision to leave the profession after 13 years due to the ongoing instability.

Chris Klaus, a special education teacher, criticized the district's handling of payroll, stating that the Empower system has not been effectively resolved nearly a year after its implementation. He called for more accessible support for staff dealing with payroll issues, highlighting the need for timely solutions to prevent further employee dissatisfaction.

Gloria Mazajewski, a former employee, raised concerns about the reduction of her accrued sick days, which she believes were unjustly calculated. She urged the district to address these discrepancies, as they affect retirement benefits.

Parent and PTA co-president Sarah Grossman Swenson delivered a petition signed by over 130 families, urging the district to prioritize fixing the Empower system. She expressed solidarity with educators and stressed the importance of competent oversight in resolving these ongoing problems.
