Sanctuary Shelter extends agreement with Episcopal Community Services for three more years

A significant resolution was passed at the San Francisco County government meeting, approving a second amendment to the grant agreement between Episcopal Community Services (ECS) and the Department of Homeless and Supportive Housing. This amendment extends the grant term for shelter services at the Sanctuary Shelter by three years, now running until June 30, 2026, and increases funding by approximately $17 million, bringing the total to around $26 million.

The Sanctuary Shelter, located at 201 Eighth Street, currently accommodates 136 adult guests, with a nightly operational cost of about $111 per person. This funding will enhance shelter operations, allowing for an increase in case managers and shelter monitors, as well as addressing rising operational costs. The shelter has been a vital resource, serving a diverse population, including seniors and individuals from various ethnic backgrounds.

During the meeting, Supervisor Emily Cohen highlighted the importance of the services provided at the Sanctuary, noting a 93% occupancy rate as of late May. Over the past fiscal year, the shelter served over 520 individuals, reflecting the ongoing need for supportive housing in the community.

The resolution received unanimous support from the board, with no performance or financial issues reported. The commitment to extend services at the Sanctuary Shelter underscores the county's dedication to addressing homelessness and providing essential support to vulnerable populations. The next steps involve finalizing the agreement and continuing to foster community partnerships to enhance service delivery.
