Teachers demand urgent action on pay issues at SFUSD board meeting

The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) held a public meeting on July 4, 2025, where educators voiced significant concerns regarding payroll issues and the impact on their livelihoods. One teacher, Ms. Williams, reported discovering errors in her paycheck dating back to January 2021, resulting in a $2,500 tax liability. She expressed frustration over delayed payments and inadequate communication from the payroll department. Another educator, Sarita Lehi, revealed she was underpaid by $10,000 to $12,000 due to mismanagement of her transcripts, which she had submitted prior to her hiring. Despite multiple attempts to resolve the issue through HR, she received no satisfactory response.

Kaylee Yoshi Spiegelman echoed these sentiments, recalling her own struggles with payroll errors during her onboarding process. She emphasized the need for SFUSD to provide financial consultations for teachers to help them navigate these issues. Kim Ellis, another teacher, raised concerns about the mental and financial stress these payroll problems are causing, warning that they could lead to a loss of dedicated educators.

The meeting also addressed broader issues, including the potential cuts to essential programs and positions within the district. Bakhra Shah criticized the district for not allowing Muslim students to observe Eid and for cutting vital programs that support student leadership and equity. Alita Fisher, representing the Mission High School PTSA, urged the board to consider adding Eid to the school calendar and highlighted the need for teachers to have more planning time and timely pay.

The meeting concluded with a call for immediate action to rectify the payroll issues and support educators, emphasizing the importance of retaining quality teachers in the district. The urgency of these concerns reflects a growing discontent among educators, who feel undervalued and disrespected in their roles. The SFUSD is now faced with the challenge of addressing these systemic issues to restore trust and morale among its teaching staff.
