The San Francisco City Commission has taken a significant step towards revitalizing the former Transbay Temporary Terminal site by approving an interim activation plan during their recent meeting. This decision aims to transform the 3.3-acre area into a vibrant community space while awaiting future development of affordable housing, retail, and open spaces.
The commission authorized a revocable permit for Eastcut Landing Partners (ECLP) to design and manage interim uses at the site, which has remained vacant since the temporary transit operations ended in late 2019. The interim activation is expected to provide a range of community-oriented activities and services at no cost to the city, responding to local interest in utilizing the space for beneficial purposes until permanent construction begins.
ECLP's proposal includes a diverse mix of programming designed to engage the community. Plans feature food and beverage vendors, a family-friendly beer garden, fitness and recreation areas, and spaces for seasonal events and pop-up activities. The activation will also include a children's play area, a dog run, and an outdoor cinema, all aimed at fostering social interactions and supporting local businesses recovering from the impacts of COVID-19.
The commission's decision follows a thorough request for proposals process, where ECLP was selected for their robust activation plan and strong community outreach efforts. The site is anticipated to be open seven days a week, with dedicated staff overseeing operations, maintenance, and security.
This initiative not only addresses immediate community needs but also sets the stage for future development in the Transbay area, reinforcing the city’s commitment to creating inclusive and accessible public spaces. As the project moves forward, residents can look forward to a dynamic environment that enhances community engagement and supports local economic recovery.
