A significant step towards addressing homelessness in San Francisco was taken during a recent government meeting, where officials approved a resolution for a long-term ground lease and a permanent loan for the development of 180 Jones Street. The project, spearheaded by the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation (TNDC), aims to construct a nine-story building featuring 70 affordable housing units, including 35 dedicated to supportive housing for adults experiencing homelessness.
Anne Romero, a senior project manager at the Mayor's Office of Housing and Community Development, presented the proposal, highlighting the city's commitment to tackling the housing crisis. The total development cost is estimated at $53.6 million, with the city contributing approximately $13.95 million through a loan agreement. This funding is part of an inclusionary housing initiative, which allows market-rate developers to meet their affordable housing obligations.
Construction is slated to begin in early June 2022, with completion expected by December 2023, pending final approvals. The project is seen as a vital addition to the neighborhood, addressing both the need for affordable housing and support for vulnerable populations.
Public comments during the meeting included concerns about the affordability criteria for the units, with suggestions to consider family-sized units in future developments. Despite these reservations, the resolution received unanimous support from the board members, who expressed their commitment to advancing the project.
As San Francisco continues to grapple with a housing shortage and rising homelessness, the approval of the 180 Jones Street development marks a hopeful stride towards providing essential housing solutions for those in need.
