Air District donates $100K air filtration equipment for wildfire preparedness in San Francisco

San Francisco County is set to enhance its emergency preparedness for wildfire events following a recent government meeting where the Department of Emergency Management (DEM) received a significant commitment from the Bay Area Air District. The Air District will donate approximately $100,000 worth of heavy-duty portable air filtration equipment to DEM, aimed at mitigating the risks associated with poor air quality during wildfire seasons. This proactive measure is part of a broader initiative to ensure the city is better equipped to handle environmental challenges.

The equipment, which will be distributed across various neighborhoods, is intended for use during periods of consecutive days of poor air quality, although there are no restrictions on its use outside of wildfire events. DEM is currently conducting an internal equity analysis to ensure fair distribution of the units, drawing on insights from community-based organizations.

In addition to this equipment donation, the meeting also addressed a grant agreement between Urban Alchemy and the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing. This agreement will support emergency shelter operations for approximately 250 adults experiencing homelessness at a designated property on Post Street, with a total funding of about $18.7 million through mid-2024.

Both initiatives reflect the county's commitment to addressing pressing community needs, from environmental health to homelessness. The positive recommendations from the committee will now move forward to the full board for final approval, marking a significant step in enhancing public safety and support services in San Francisco.
