Treasure Island community develops housing plan with feedback from diverse stakeholders

In a recent government meeting, community leaders and housing developers discussed the ongoing development of Treasure Island, emphasizing the importance of creating a diverse and equitable neighborhood. The meeting highlighted the collaborative efforts of various organizations, including Catholic Charities, HomeRise, and the YMCA, all working together to implement a comprehensive housing plan.

The discussion centered around the lessons learned from past experiences in developing mixed-income communities. Key speakers stressed that successful community development requires intentional planning beyond just the percentage of affordable housing. Factors such as retail spaces, transportation, parks, and community facilities are crucial to fostering a vibrant neighborhood.

Co-executive director Nella Goncalves shared insights into the process of creating an aspirational statement for the development, which took six months and involved extensive community engagement. A work group comprising residents, businesses, and nonprofits provided feedback, resulting in 127 responses that shaped the final statement. The next step is to present this statement to the Board of Supervisors for approval.

This meeting underscores the commitment of San Francisco County to address housing needs and create inclusive communities. As the development of Treasure Island progresses, the collaborative approach taken by various stakeholders may serve as a model for future housing initiatives in the region.
