SFUSD board supports AB 932 funding for Mission Promise Neighborhood project

The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) held a meeting on July 4, 2025, focusing on several key issues affecting the community and education system. The meeting began with an announcement regarding the upcoming community digest, which will include information on opportunities for public input.

Chair Alexander reported on the recent Rules Committee meeting, highlighting discussions about the Mission Promise Neighborhood project. This initiative is seeking continued funding through Assembly Bill 932 (AB 932), as federal funding is set to expire. The committee expressed support for this bill, which aligns with the community schools model.

The meeting also addressed uncertainties surrounding distance learning for the upcoming fall semester. Current provisions for distance learning are set to expire on June 30, and the committee noted that options for maintaining distance learning are limited under existing state education codes. Ongoing discussions among state legislators and the governor are expected to clarify the situation.

Additionally, the board took positions on various legislative bills, including those related to an election day holiday, ethnic studies, and mental health issues. The board recommended support for these bills, with the exception of two related to educational technology, which will be monitored as they develop.

Public comments included support for the KALW radio station report and a call for the board to adhere to restorative justice practices. A member of the public also urged the board to restore a previously removed member to their position.

The meeting concluded with a moment of silence to honor families, staff, and students affected by COVID-19, emphasizing the community's ongoing challenges during this time. The next committee meetings were announced, with a budget and business services meeting scheduled for the following day.
