San Francisco maintains indoor mask mandate amid declining COVID cases

San Francisco's Department of Public Health has reported a significant decline in COVID-19 cases, with the average dropping to 3.39 new cases per day as of February 8, down from over 2,000 in early January. Despite the easing of some statewide masking orders, indoor masking remains mandatory in San Francisco's K-12 schools. All students and staff, regardless of vaccination status, must wear masks indoors at all times, except during eating, drinking, napping, or if a medical exemption applies. To support ongoing testing efforts, the district has made various testing options available through its Color testing program, which includes daily pickups at school sites. Additionally, the district has received a one-time distribution of rapid home test kits, which will be allocated to students and staff before spring break. Families are encouraged to save at least one test for use before returning to school after the break, regardless of symptoms or vaccination status.

The district is also collaborating with the Department of Public Health to establish vaccine clinics at select elementary schools, emphasizing the importance of vaccinations and boosters in preventing severe COVID-19 symptoms.
