The San Francisco County Budget and Finance Committee convened on July 4, 2025, to discuss two significant grant contracts aimed at enhancing McLaren Park's infrastructure. The meeting focused on retroactively authorizing the Recreation and Park Department to enter into agreements with the California Department of Parks and Recreation for trail improvement projects.
The first item discussed was a resolution for a grant contract worth $250,000, which will fund trail improvements in McLaren Park. This grant is part of a broader initiative stemming from the 2012 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Park Bond, which allocated $2 million for trail enhancements. The Recreation and Park Department's Tony Moran explained that the grant, awarded in 2018, requires the department to maintain the improvements for a contract period extending from July 1, 2017, to June 30, 2047. The project is expected to commence in 2022, although no funds have been expended yet.
The second item involved a $207,000 grant from the Habitat Conservation Fund for constructing a new multi-use pedestrian and bicycle trail adjacent to Visitation Avenue within McLaren Park. This project is also linked to the 2012 park bond and is scheduled to begin in the fall of this year. Similar to the first grant, the department must maintain the new trail for the duration of the contract, which runs from July 1, 2019, to June 30, 2039.
Both resolutions received positive recommendations from the committee, with no public comments recorded during the meeting. The committee's approval will allow the Recreation and Park Department to move forward with these important projects aimed at improving access and environmental education in McLaren Park.
