San Francisco County is taking a significant step towards revitalizing the Hunters View neighborhood with the approval of a $33.9 million infrastructure loan agreement. This funding, authorized by the Mayor's Office of Housing and Community Development, aims to support the third phase of the Hunters View Hope SF Development, which will ultimately provide up to 800 units of public, affordable, and market-rate housing.
During the recent government meeting, officials highlighted the importance of this initiative as part of a broader effort to address systemic issues of poverty and racism in the community. The Hope SF initiative is touted as the nation’s first large-scale community development and reparations project, designed to create inclusive neighborhoods while preventing the displacement of current residents.
The infrastructure improvements will include new streets, utility installations, and the creation of public spaces, setting the stage for the construction of 118 affordable housing units and additional market-rate lots. The project aims to replace all existing public housing units on the site, ensuring that no families are displaced during the transformation.
Cindy Evans, Senior Project Manager at the Mayor's Office, emphasized that the loan is crucial for preparing the site for future development and for meeting state financing requirements. Construction is expected to begin in mid-October and conclude by December 2022, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing revitalization of Hunters View.
As the project moves forward, it represents a commitment to restoring public benefits to a community that has faced decades of disinvestment, aiming to foster a vibrant and equitable environment for all residents.
