Rosa Parks educators honored for rescuing elderly from nearby burning building

In a remarkable display of courage, educators from Rosa Parks Elementary School were honored for their heroic actions during a fire that broke out in a nearby building on May 13. The school staff, including Celia Ina Lee, Vincent Reyes, Ruben Guzman, Marlene Zachary, and Remy Nakamoto, sprang into action when they noticed smoke during recess.

While some staff members called 911, others rushed into the burning building to alert elderly residents, banging on windows and doors to ensure everyone was aware of the danger. Their quick thinking and bravery helped many residents escape safely, while fellow colleagues ensured that students were kept safe inside the school.

The swift response of the San Francisco Fire Department was also acknowledged, as they worked diligently to extinguish the flames and assist the victims. Although there were casualties due to the fire, the decisive actions of the Rosa Parks staff significantly reduced the potential for greater harm.

The city expressed immense gratitude to the Rosa Parks community for their selflessness and bravery, highlighting the powerful lesson they provided to students and the entire city about what it truly means to be a hero.
