SFUSD addresses deaf education concerns from parents and teachers

In a passionate plea during the recent San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) meeting, parent Chelsea Thompson urged officials to reconsider the closure of a vital program for deaf and hard of hearing students. Thompson, a parent of two, highlighted the critical need for early language development in children aged 0 to 3, emphasizing that the program's closure is a significant oversight by the administration. "These babies have language and communication deficits that are crucial to address," she stated, calling for immediate action to rehouse the program.

Adding to the urgency, Janae, a teacher of the deaf at Cesar Chavez Elementary School, echoed Thompson's concerns. As the only Black teacher of the deaf in the district, she pointed out the dwindling support for deaf education and the lack of American Sign Language (ASL) classes in schools. "ASL is the third most widely used language in the United States, yet it is not on our world language list," she lamented, advocating for ASL to be included in the curriculum to better support students and help them graduate with diplomas.

The meeting also included a brief public comment period for SFUSD students, but no students participated. Following this, the board moved through routine agenda items, including the consent calendar and retroactive contracts, with unanimous support from board members.

The discussions surrounding the deaf and hard of hearing program underscore a growing concern within the community about the accessibility and inclusivity of education for all students. As the board continues its agenda, the calls for action from parents and educators highlight the urgent need for a commitment to support these vulnerable students.
