San Francisco Designates Trocadero Clubhouse as Historic Landmark for Preservation

San Francisco County has taken a significant step towards preserving its historical heritage by moving to designate the Trocadero Clubhouse as a landmark. During a recent government meeting, Supervisor Marr introduced an ordinance aimed at recognizing the clubhouse, located within Sigmund Stern Recreation Grove, as a historical landmark under the city’s planning code.

Constructed in 1892, the Trocadero Clubhouse is noted for its architectural significance as a well-preserved example of Stick-Eastlake architecture and is one of the few remaining nineteenth-century structures in Southwestern San Francisco. This designation marks a milestone as it will be the first building in the Parkside District to receive landmark status, highlighting the area's rich history and cultural heritage.

The initiative for this landmark designation was spearheaded by Parkside Heritage, a community group formed to advocate for the preservation of local historical sites. Their efforts, supported by various organizations including SF Heritage and the Western Neighborhoods Project, culminated in a unanimous recommendation from the Historic Preservation Commission, which recognized the clubhouse's importance as a former roadhouse and community gathering space.

The Trocadero Clubhouse has served as a social hub for the community, hosting events such as weddings, birthday parties, and local gatherings. Its preservation is seen as vital to maintaining the historical narrative of the West Side of San Francisco.
