San Francisco committee approves $194K grant for McLaren Park planning study

San Francisco County's Recreation and Park Department is set to enhance community access to McLaren Park following a recent resolution approved by the Board of Supervisors. The resolution retroactively authorizes the acceptance and expansion of a $194,000 grant from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, aimed at implementing the McLaren Park and neighborhood connections planning study.

During the meeting, Tony Moran from the Recreation and Parks Capital and Planning Division explained that the department initially applied for the grant in 2019, with the project intended to improve connections within McLaren Park and between the community and the park. Although the grant was awarded in 2020, discrepancies in the appropriated amount led to the need for this retroactive resolution. The original budget had only accounted for $130,000, while the actual grant was for $494,000. The resolution aims to correct this oversight and ensure the project continues smoothly.

The committee emphasized the importance of transparency regarding the use of taxpayer funds, with members expressing the need for clear line-item breakdowns of expenditures. Public comments highlighted community concerns about the park's safety and the necessity for detailed financial reporting to ensure accountability.

As the project moves forward, the Recreation and Park Department is expected to provide updated documentation to clarify the retroactive nature of the resolution.
